Frequently Asked Questions

Which vehicles are included in this recall?

2019-2020 Model Year Ford Fusion® Energi sedans with 30Ah plug-in hybrid electric vehicle cell batteries built between December 6, 2017, and July 27, 2020.

What is the issue tied to this recall?

Certain vehicles may not start or will display a “Stop Safely Now” message while driving, followed by a loss of power within a few seconds. There is also a risk of a vehicle fire breaking out in the trunk area while driving. Both increase the risk of injury.

What is the cause of the issue?

The current interrupt device (CID) is creating excess voltage and current flow, damaging the Battery Energy Control Module (BECM).

What is the expected repair?

We’re working on a remedy now.

What should customers do in the meantime?

Customers should not charge their vehicles until the remedy is available. Lowering the battery’s state of charge will reduce the risk of power loss and fire around the battery control module in the trunk.

When will the repair be ready?

We are working hard to find a solution as soon as possible.

Why weren’t customers instructed to park outside?

We don’t have any evidence that shows unattended vehicles are at risk.

Can customers still drive their vehicles?

Ford is not instructing customers to stop driving their vehicles. Until the remedy is available, lowering the battery’s state of charge will reduce the risk of power loss and fire around the vehicle’s battery control module, which is located in the trunk.

Since customers won’t have access to the charging capabilities of their vehicle, what will you do to make up for that?

We will soon be sending more information to customers concerning the compensation about providing for lost fuel savings. These vehicles normally receive around 26 miles per charge.

Are there any open investigations on this specific issue?
